Pellets can be a healthy addition to a Russian tortoise diet. Commercial tortoise pellets, like Mazuri and Zoo Med Grassland are popular choices.

You can offer BOTH pellets to Russian tortoises. There’s no rule that says you have to choose one or the other. Both tortoise pellets are nutritious and have health benefits for your tortoise.

Feed pellets 1-3 times a week as a part of a varied diet of weeds and greens. Alternate between Mazuri and Grassland. You don’t have to choose between them.

Mazuri Tortoise Diet

Mazuri tortoise diet comes in two versions – original and LS. Both versions are high-fiber and packed with vitamins and minerals. LS Mazuri is a smaller pellet that features less starchy ingredients.

But, with both versions of Mazuri, you’ll find soybean and oats are high on the ingredients lists. Mazuri pellets even include molasses. Overall, the ingredients list of Mazuri is not impressive. With all the fillers, unknown and unhealthy ingredients, you may be held back from buying Mazuri. But Mazuri pellets are highly praised by many tortoise breeders and long-term hobbyists.

Mazuri tortoise food is known to help with weight gain for sick tortoises as well as tortoises overcoming an illness. When moistened, the pellets have a smell that will help entice tortoises to take a bite and find they love it, making it a great appetite stimulant.

Zoo Med Grassland

Grassland pellets are packed with long-stem fibers from natural grasses like oat, timothy and alfalfa. It also contains dandelion greens, yucca and other plants. When you moisten Grassland pellets, the fibers and plants can be clearly seen. Yes, there are a lot of filler and scientific-sounding ingredients, but it’s clear what’s the main ingredient in Grassland pellets as soon as you see the pellets.

Not a lot of tortoises immediately run to a plate of Zoo Med Grassland pellets, but with persistence, you can get your Russian tortoise to eat these tortoise pellets.
