Best Calcium for Inside Russian Tortoise

Best Calcium for Inside Russian Tortoise

When shopping for a calcium supplement for a tortoise, consider how the tortoise is housed. Whether the Russian tortoise is housed inside or outside will determine what type of calcium supplement the tortoise needs.

If the Russian tortoise spends most, or all, of the time in an inside enclosure, then you need a calcium supplement that includes D3. Vitamin D3 is important for calcium absorption.

Tortoises that spend time outside are able to absorb natural UVB from the sun. Natural UVB from the sun triggers the body to create D3. If the Russian tortoise spends at least a few hours a week outside, it can absorb enough UVB rays to produce sufficient D3.

If the tortoise is not able to spend time outside, it is important to use a supplement with D3. Although artificial lighting does not mimic the sun’s benefits 100%, it is still important to use a UV source in an indoor enclosure.

Importance of Calcium for Russian Tortoises

Calcium is vital for healthy bones, growth and overall bodily functions. Without proper calcium in your tortoise’s diet, he can develop metabolic bone disease. Metabolic bone disease can be very painful and can lead to deformity and sometimes death, if left untreated.

Your Russian tortoise should consume calcium in his diet. Greens like kale, collard greens and spinach are rich in calcium. Although, you don’t want to overfeed these greens because they are also high in oxalates. In general, dark, leafy greens are safe to feed Russian tortoises as a part of a varied diet.

To ensure that your Russian tortoise is consuming appropriate calcium, sprinkle a calcium supplement on the tortoise’s food a few times a week.
