Unlike a dog, tortoises live for decades under the right care and conditions. Russian tortoise live up to, and likely over, 100 years old in the wild. Under optimal conditions, a pet Russian tortoise can live many decades. And, if you’re lucky, you’ll have to will your pet to a family member who will care for it when you can’t.

How long do Russian tortoises live in captivity?

In the wild, it’s experts believe Russian tortoises can live up to 100 years, and probably more. However, in captivity, under the right care, diet and overall health conditions, Russian tortoises live an average of 40-50 years.

Average Tortoise Lifespan

Tortoises, in general have a long lifespan. Tortoises actually have the longest lifespan of any land animal. However, different species and sizes of tortoises will have different lifespans. Unlike dogs, larger tortoise species have longer lifespans, and smaller tortoises have a shorter lifespan.

For example, in captivity, sulcata tortoises average 70 to 100 years and longer. There’s even a Galápagos tortoise that lived 170 years in captivity, whereas most average 100 years. On the other hand, smaller Russian tortoises averages about 40 years in captivity.

How to Make My Russian Tortoise Live Longer

In order to help your Russian tortoise live as long as possible and to the fullest, there are a few things you can do.

First, make sure that your Russian tortoise has a varied diet. Ensure that the diet is healthy and high in fiber. Offer a variety of weeds and leafy greens. Keep vegetables to a minimum, and avoid feeding your Russian tortoise fruits.

Next, ensure that the Russian tortoise enclosure is set up properly. Ensure proper heating and lighting. Use safe substrate in the tortoise enclosure.

Reduce stress in your tortoise. Just like in humans, less stress means a healthier mind and body. Follow proper care and diet and your Russian tortoise will be able to live to its fullest.
